Sharon Louthian

American by birth and Moroccan-Berber by marriage, I first traveled to Morocco as a tourist and fell in love with the country and its people (one in particular). Since my initial visit, I have traveled extensively throughout the country and especially enjoy discovering secret places off of the beaten path. Together with Abderrahman Idrissi, my Moroccan husband who has over 20 years experience in the tourism industry, we enlisted the help of his brothers (who serve as our in-country tour managers) to create Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures. As a family business, we enjoy developing relationships with our guests that continue beyond their trips to Morocco and our goal is for our guests to leave with a little of our love for the country and its people.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"People always ask me what there is to do in Morocco and I always reply that an easier question would be what can't you do there! And we can help you with all of it. Of course, we share the rich history and the important landmarks that any tour to Morocco includes, but we also provide unique opportunities to mix and mingle with the locals that allow our guests to gain insight into day to day life. So if you are looking for an authentic experience (budget or luxury) that takes you off the beaten path, then we are the company for you. And if you want to throw in a little hiking, trekking, rock climbing, mountain biking, surfing, kite-surfing, mule trekking, horseback riding, or even skiing (yes, I said skiing), we can do that, too!"

How did you get involved in travel?

"My path towards a career in travel was a crooked one, but began with a vacation to Morocco in 2012 where I met the most amazing guide, Abderrahman (Abdou for short). He was so amazing, in fact, that after a few more visits we decided to get married. After he had settled into life in the United States, an opportunity presented itself for us to create Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures. And so, after many years of discussion, we "pulled the trigger" and Morocco Immersion was born."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"Obviously, my trip to Morocco in 2012 was life changing - talk about transformative travel experiences! Besides meeting my soulmate on that trip, I was mesmerized by the desert and upon my return dreamt about it for 30 nights in a row. Abdou told me that that was the magic of the desert. In subsequent trips, I got to learn more about the culture and meet more of the locals, and that's when I discovered that despite the breathtaking beauty of the landscapes, the true beauty of Morocco is the rich culture and the warmth and generosity of its people. Sharon did a fine job helping us plan our trip. Our driver, Sallam, was great. The culture and cities we visited were everything we expected. However, we were not prepared for the types of roads we would be travelling on for long hours on this trip. All four of us are 70+ years old and the vehicle used was not very uncomfortable in the back two rows of seats. My wife and our friend Karen were bounced around almost continuously. Plus the back of the seat was tilted back making it impossible to sit upright. The nine hour ride to the desert was especially difficult as the road was often rough, winding with tight curves. The road down the mountain into Marrakech was under construction which caused us to drive on temporary roads which were very rough.
Our room at the hotel in Rabat was dangerous. It had what we called the "pit", which was a sunken area with steps less than 5 feet from the foot of the bed with no guard rails. Our room in Chefchaouen was in need of repair as the walls had cracks and chunks of plaster had fallen off in the bathroom. A lamp had fallen over and couldn't be made to stand back up. The stairs up to our room on the third floor were narrow and treacherous. Our companions were on the ground floor and were subjected to loud music and noise from the town square until past midnight.
However, the hotel in Boumalne Dades was a pleasant surprise. Excellent, friendly service made our stay there very enjoyable. The hotels in Fes and Marrakech were outstanding.
The visit to the Sahara and the tent camp, which we were looking forward to, was not worth the two days on the road (one going and one returning).
Overall the trip would have been more enjoyable with a better vehicle and less driving.

The itinerary for this trip was a bit of a challenge for us 70 something age group. It included a lot of driving on some pretty rough road surfaces, some under construction (especially in the Atlas Mountains). In retrospect, I am delighted that we covered so much of the country. We did insert a "rest" day toward the end of the trip before heading to Marrakech that was very beneficial to us and I might suggest this as a possible option for other groups in the future. All in all, it turned out to be a wonderful adventure and informational trip. We felt that this "immersion" experience helped us to embrace the Moroccan culture and allowed us to learn so much more about Islam and the friendliness of the Muslim people. I would definitely encourage people to take this trip with Kim Kim but would make sure to identify some of the specific physical challenges that might be faced along the way.
Sincerely,
Robert (Bob) Morgan

Hi Karen,

Thanks for taking the time to write a review for us. We are thrilled to hear that you had a great experience with both Sallam and Said and that you found, like us, our country to be amazing! We were sorry to hear, however, that the parts of the trip outside of our control so negatively affected you overall experience. Elevators are rare commodities in Morocco and since most of the riads in the country are, in some cases, centuries old, the stairs can be difficult to navigate. For our more mature travelers, we do often arrange rooms on lower levels to help to mitigate this, but since we booked upgraded rooms for you (i.e. suites), that was not possible in your case. And yes, crossing Tichka over the High Atlas Mountains does make that drive somewhat uncomfortable - especially if there is a lot of construction going on - but unfortunately, that is the only way to cross the mountains from the desert to Marrakech. Believe it or not, but that road has been improved significantly since my first trip over the mountains - they have widened a good portion of the road and has been "straightened" in a lot of areas!

Thanks again for the feedback. We will definitely keep it in mind for future travelers and I do a better job to communicate the type of drive (i.e. no freeways) that travelers should expect in addition to just the travel times that I normally provide.

Thanks again,
Sharon, Sallam, and the rest of the Morocco Immersion family

We visited Casablanca, Fes, Riad, Chefchaouen and Marrakesh. Sharon and her team thought of everything and made this trip really special.
It was very important for us to experience the culture and architecture, Sharon booked Riads that were beautiful and cozy.
Our driver, Hicham, was one of the key factors to the success of our trip. Hicham, which means - generous, stays true to his name. He was not only a great driver, but a generous, great person, a warm and knowledgeable. He was there to help us with anything we needed. Hicham loves to take selfies and we took a lot of them... Sharon made sure to communicate with Hicham that we wanted to visit the house my mom grew in, and through the local guide Hicham made it happen. Another thing that made this trip special is the fact the Sharon uses local guides in every city. This makes the experience so much special. we felt that we learned from the "locals" and in a way we experienced the local life. Every city we visited has its own charm, and they all were fascinating, beautiful and very unique.
Thank you Sharon and the team at Morocco Immersion for planning and executing such an amazing trip.

Yassine, our tour manager, was fantastic. He was friendly, warm and funny! We were impressed by Yassine's patience on our long car rides, especially the one from Rabat to Merzouga (an 8-hour journey!) Even on those long days of travel, Yassine was also so welcoming and willing to teach us about the varied Moroccan landscapes, and he knew all the best spots for photos!

Our Fes tour guide, Rashid, was so knowledgeable: we learned so much about the history of the souks and gained a deeper appreciation for the cultural diversity in Morocco. Our Rabat tour guide, Abdel, was so friendly and we learned so much about the important political history of Fes and also got insight on modern day Moroccan culture.

Our trip to Morocco was pretty amazing, partly because the country itself is so amazing, and partly because Sharon, KimKim, and the team at Morocco Immersion Tours pretty much thought of everything to make it really special.

When we first spoke to Sharon, we told her that we'd booked a flight to Marrakech and intended to spend the first four days there -- and that we'd like her help with the rest of our 11-day trip. I think we said something like, "Here's our budget. How about a little time in the mountains, a little time in the desert, a couple of days in Fes, and then we fly back to the States from Riad?" And, with only that input, Sharon put together a draft of an itinerary that was based on our preferences, and filled with fun and interesting places to eat, stop, tour, learn, meet crafts people, hear music, and enjoy excellent accommodations along the way.

To say that the itinerary was very detailed and very complete makes it sound boring, but the detail was very reassuring (i.e., someone is actually thinking of EVERYTHING), and the way it was written got us even more excited about the trip than we already were.

Key to the success of our trip was our driver, Rachid, who was not only a great driver, but also a great person: warm, funny, likable, knowledgeable, and ready to help us with anything we needed on a day-to-day basis. He was our driver, our guide, our translator, our photographer (because sometimes our "selfies" aren't as good as they could be), our cultural tutor, and more. It was a real pleasure to spend time with him.

We are new to new having someone else plan a vacation for us and drive us around, because we usually do it ourselves. We thought Morocco might be the place to get some help from the experts because there is so much to see and do, we could use help prioritizing -- and not only do we not speak Arabic and Berber, we can't even read the alphabets!

This was truly an amazing experience from beginning to end. Sharon and Rachid took all the work and anxiety out of everything, and gave us the luxury of just being able to relax, experience, and enjoy!

Hi Catherine,

I'm a little bit behind in replying to our reviews, but I just wanted to send a short message to say that we are so happy that you had a fantastic trip to Morocco and enjoyed your time with Sallam. Thanks also for the feedback regarding your local guides in Marrakech and Fes. I was especially pleased to read that Hassan in Marrakech was great with your son. That can be a pretty overwhelming place for anyone!

Again, thank you so much for the review and for trusting us with your trip! Keep in touch!

Tough gig as we did a lot of miles every day in order to get out to the Big Dunes and he was fasting so must have been hard and he was understandably keen to get to our destinations for sundown.
The highlights were many and varied but Big Dunes was a big hit, the southern side journey back to Ouzarzete was stunning, lunch by the road sides, Berber pizza and the small souk in Rissani, our lovely last Rhiad was an oasis after the long drives and the must see of Jardin Majorelle is magical. Lower lights - we were sad not to hike or walk in the monkeys fingers (not sure why we didn’t) and whilst the Kzr in Boumain Dades was excellent, I was a bit frustrated by the carpet showroom. I wouldn’t stay in Ouzarzete if you don’t have to - the Khasbar is empty and a bit too spotless relative to those still occupied and we did see a lot of them!
All in all we were happy, loved Morocco, certainly would go again and would use Morocco Immersion but more likely would fly in and out of different cities.
The boys said they felt they’d been away for 2 weeks, not 5.5 days, and seen loads.

Hi Olivia,

We are glad to hear that you had an overall great trip and that you loved Morocco! It is always our goal to share a little of our love for the country with our guests. Normally, your driver also serves as your tour manager and is available to provide insight in the spots where guides are needed. As you can see from other reviews, Yassine normally does this quite well - but perhaps he was lacking little of his normal energy due to fasting (I know it does a number on me). Thank you for letting us know about the Monkey Fingers hike. You were schedule to do the that as we discussed with a shorter (or skipped altogether) walk in Tinghir. I specifically discussed that with the team. so I am not sure why it wasn't executed. It may have been an oversight since we don't normally include that activity when guests only have 1 night in Dades, but we will discuss this issue with the team to ensure that it doesn't happen on future trips.
And yes, it is a long drive to the desert. Most of our guests feel like it is worth the drive, as we discussed on the phone. Unfortunately, domestic flights are not great in Morocco - except for a couple of exceptions, those flights are truly commuter flights that go to/from Casablanca, departing for Casablanca early in the morning and departing from there late in the day. So, flying between cities often results in wasting a whole day in Casablanca airport (and the total hours of flying tend to be more than driving without getting to see the spots in between).
Thanks for feedback and we are super happy that you loved Morocco and look forward to you returning anytime to explore a little more!
Thanks,
Sharon, Yassine, and the Morocco Immersion team
